Joyce has been working with couples for twenty-two years. She received her certification in sex therapy in 1998. Sexual problems are quite easy to work with and have a high degree of success. Sex therapy is a bit different than traditional therapy in that the therapist acts as the teacher or coach. Homework assignments are given and the therapy is brief and solution oriented. Relationship counseling encompasses building healthy communication styles as well as understanding how the problems emerge. Sometimes the work needs to go to a deeper level, exploring childhood beliefs and values. The therapist acts as a guide helping the couple explore the individual problems in a safe, nonjudgmental environment. The goal in couples' counseling is to transform the relationship from an adversarial position to a partnership allowing the couple to resolve the difficulties and create deeper intimacy.
